The town in Arkansas has a hanging tree
where “niggers” were lynched til 1952
It stands in the center of 4th Street
no plaque and no large branches
to commemorate its days of Southern ‘glory’
The limbs that could support a hanging man
have been cut off
and now are thick burls
the size of pie pans
like scabs festering at the edges of history.
